$500
Donation Made To Children's Center
Proceeds
from two lectures hosted by the Greater Rochester Association for
Women Attorneys were donated to the Children's Center at the Monroe
County Family Court, housed on the third floor of the Hall of Justice.
The
University of Rochester Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry oversees
the operation of the Children's Center which cares for over 2,500
children annually. Opened in 1995, the Children's Center was one of
six pilot projects in New York State offering free childcare to parents
attending court hearings.
“This
is the third year that the Herstory lecture series has generated enough
money to share our efforts with the community,” stated Monroe County
Family Court Judge Marilyn O'Connor. “ We are proud to present a $500
donation to the Children's Center this year.”
Wendy
Nilsen, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry at the University
of Rochester noted that the gift will help support the Children Center
's ongoing effort to give every child a book. “When I got the news,
it made my day,” said Nilsen. “GRAWA's generosity will help to enhance
our early education focus.”
This
year's Herstory lectures featured Myrna Felder, Manhattan matrimonial
attorney, and two local doctors: Dr. Wende Logan Young and Dr. Ruth
A. Lawrence.
“Both
programs were inspiring and energizing,” noted Elaine Cole, a key
participant on the Herstory Committee. “Everyone who attended seemed
to thoroughly enjoy hearing the fascinating stories these accomplished
women had to share.”
In
prior years, GRAWA has shared Herstory proceeds with the Upstate Chapter
of the National Kidney Foundation and Alternatives for Battered Women.
